Barndominiums in Yukon

Yukon, on the west side of the metro in Canadian County, mixes established neighborhoods with acreage toward El Reno. The rule most likely to affect a barndo owner here is about the shop, not the house.

Uncoated metal is out for accessory buildings

Yukon's zoning code says accessory buildings shall not have uncoated metal on the exterior (Yukon zoning code (Zoneomics copy)). Painted or factory-coated metal panels are the norm on new barndos, but bare galvanized siding on a detached shop would not meet the rule.

Height and setbacks for shops

No accessory building in Yukon may exceed 30 feet in height. Taller accessory buildings also need one extra foot of front and rear setback for each foot of height over ten feet (Yukon zoning code (Zoneomics copy)). A shop with 14-foot doors and a steep roof can reach that limit faster than expected.

What we could not verify

We saw references to a Yukon ordinance with further limits on metal exteriors, but could not read the document, so it is not stated here. Ask the City's development services office for current exterior rules before you design.

Yukon tips

Kits and the shop question

Many Yukon buyers price a kit for the shop and a builder for the house. A kit covers the shell only; the slab, insulation, electrical and permits are extra (Turner & Son: kit vs turnkey in Oklahoma). Confirm the panel coating and color are listed on the kit order, since a replacement panel order later costs time.
