Barndominiums in Mustang
Mustang in Canadian County has grown quickly, but its rural edges toward Tuttle still have room for acreage homes. Its zoning code sets lot sizes and, in some districts, building materials.
R-E Residential Estate
The R-E district is meant for single-family homes with rural amenities. Each home needs at least three-quarters of an acre, a 55-foot lot width at the building line and a 30-foot front yard (Mustang zoning code (Zoneomics copy)). Main and accessory buildings may cover no more than 25 percent of an interior lot, accessory buildings no more than 20 percent of the rear yard, and no building may exceed 2.5 stories or 35 feet (Mustang zoning code (Zoneomics copy)).
R-1 lots
In R-1 the minimum lot is 7,200 square feet with a 30-foot front yard (Mustang zoning code (Zoneomics copy)). A barndo on a small R-1 lot is possible on paper, but the shop space many buyers want may not fit the coverage limits.
Where masonry is required
Mustang requires a 100 percent brick or masonry facade for two-family and multifamily buildings in its R-3 and R-4 districts (Mustang zoning code (Zoneomics copy)). We did not find a citywide metal-siding rule for single-family homes, so ask the City and check any subdivision covenants.
Mustang tips
- Check the 25 percent coverage limit if you plan a large attached shop.
- Rural lots may need septic and a private well; see the OKC Metro Septic Guide and OKC Metro Water Well Guide.
- Get the height of the roof ridge from the builder; tall shop doors push it up.
